Supermax Uses Eurotherm ControllersRazor Manufacturer Gets
A Competitive Edge

Obtaining a good shave requires a blade with the finest edges, which is why quality and production consistency are fundamental requirements for Supermax Corp., a large manufacturer of disposable razor blades located in Mumbai, India. Supermax produces 10 million conventional double-sided razors and 1.2 million disposable razors per day with the help of Eurotherm controllers to control temperature during the manufacturing process.

But achieving the necessary quality and consistency depends greatly on the precise control of temperature during the blade-manufacturing process. This is especially important within the heat treatment furnaces used for making the steel which in turn is used to make the razor blades. Temperature control also is critical within the annealing and end-tempering furnaces.

To control temperatures within these two applications at the razor manufacturer's facility, Leesburg, Va.-based Eurotherm controllers were installed on the furnaces. In addition, Eurotherm controllers were added to control the injection-molding equipment used for the razor body and in special-purpose printing machines. This has helped Supermax Corp. regain control and improve quality.

Dean Signs Export Agreement
Dean Pump Division of Met-Pro Corp. has inked an agreement with Dorian Drake for international distribution. Under the terms of the agreement, Dorian Drake International, White Plains, N.Y., will manage exports for the maker of pumps for high-temperature liquids in specific international markets, including all of Europe, Africa, New Zealand and the Middle East, as well as a majority of Asia and parts of South America.

"We are excited to have Dorian Drake as part of our team," said Raymond J. De Hont, chairman and CEO of Met-Pro Corp., Harleysville, Pa. "As we continue to grow globally, this agreement will bring a new level of service to our existing customers and an exciting new product line to existing Dorian Drake customers. In addition, Dorian Drake's established distribution network will provide an immediate market presence for unearthing new applications, customers and opportunities."

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

Calculating Heat Requirements
Two basic heat energy requirements should be considered in the sizing of heaters for a particular application.

Chilling Out with Sealless Pumps
Sealless pumps can reduce maintenance requirements and downtime, making them an attractive option for many chiller applications.

Infrared Heating, LiztlerUnderstanding Drying Methods
Convection, infrared, radio frequency and combination systems: A choice of drying methods allows processors to select technologies that best suit the process. A primer outlines the advantages and disadvantages of each heating method.

Excess Air: Is it Such a Big Deal?
Available heat is the portion of the total heat input that actually stays in the oven or dryer, or the total heat input minus exhaust losses. Setting up combustion systems for too much excess air wastes fuel.

Thermocouples: A Thousand Shapes and Sizes
Every different application of thermocouples demands that you choose a shape, size and material to match the process.

Grieve

Top-Loading Oven
No. 955 is a 500°F (260°C) electrically heated, top-loading oven used for testing electronic components. Workspace of the unit measures 312 x 24 x 24". Nichrome wire elements heat the oven while four 2-hp recirculating blowers provide 8,000 cfm horizontal airflow to the workload. The top-loading oven has 4" insulated walls throughout, aluminized steel exterior and interior, and a motor-operated, rear-hinged door.

GF Piping

Transition Fittings
DoubleSafe provides a leakproof seal and prevents cracking under high torque when transitioning between metal piping systems and the company's Schedule 80 plastic piping systems. Metal-to-plastic joining is especially useful when tapping a plastic piping system to connect heat exchangers, flowmeters and other metal-ended, male-threaded instruments. The transition fittings incorporate a female-threaded metal insert molded at high pressure inside a spigot-end plastic body to address the problem of plastic pipe splitting caused by overtightening metal threads into plastic fittings.

Fiber-Optic Temperature Measurement
For temperature monitoring in harsh EMI/RFI, microwave and high-voltage environments, Luxtron 800 Series provides accuracy, stability and repeatability with the option of a faster sampling speed. The series includes fiber-optic temperature-monitoring systems configurable with either one or two measurement channels at 4 or 10 Hz measurement speeds. The tabletop version includes a two-line LED display and is encased in a tamperproof metal enclosure. The systems are compatible with the company's Fluoroptic probes, which are immune to electromagnetic interference and entirely nonmetallic.

RO Platform
Features of the RO platform include a stronger support structure, high quality stainless steel and instrumentation, and reduced permeate flux rates with better balance for reduced membrane fouling. The platform is designed with additional biocide feed and control options, greater hydraulic flexibility, and with features to minimize water usage while maximizing membrane performance. Its VFD efficiently controls the pressure and flow from the pump without using a throttle valve. It can be interlocked with water usage to minimize RO downtime that often contributes to bacterial fouling.
