Solution for Industrial Water Deionization Deionization systems that claim to operate at greater than 95 percent efficiency will be manufactured and sold by Samco Technologies, Buffalo, N.Y., using
Amberpack Deionization System technology licensed from
Rohm and Haas, Philadelphia, Pa. The companies report that the deionization systems can lower the cost of water-purification processes by increasing yield and minimizing waste for industrial water treatment applications.
The process uses a patented fractal distribution system in a packed bed countercurrent ion exchange system. The result, say the companies, is near perfect flow distribution and separation of waste fractions during the regeneration cycle. Samco’s deionization, dealkalization and softening solutions for industrial water applications will employ the new technology.
Effox Acquired by Ceco Cincinnati, Ohio-based Effox Inc. was purchased by
Ceco Environmental Corp.
, a provider of air-pollution control and ventilation systems, also located in Cincinnati. Effox engineers and manufactures dampers and expansion joints for use in flue gas and process air-handling systems and is a provider of equipment to the power industry. The company also provides design, rebuild and repair services for existing industrial systems. Effox had $28 million in sales last year with a year-end backlog of $34 million.

Fluid Testing: It Pays to Pay Attention
Regular fluid testing can result in longer fluid life, more consistent system operation, decreased system maintenance and lower operating costs.
How to Use Immersion Heaters The square flange immersion heater is used in industrial water boilers and storage tanks holding degreasing solvents, fuel oils, heat-transfer fluids and caustic solutions.
Keeping an Eye on Safety Naturally, it is important to look carefully into risk assessment of a plant or process because the consequences have the potential to be severe. The results of a major failure on a combustion system could be catastrophic.
Bearings That Can Handle The Heat The bearings on the dampers controlling airflow to two 535-MW coal-fired units at a power plant couldn’t handle the heat. High-temperature bearings solved the problem.

Intelligent Control Valve Actuator SmartLink is designed for precise, accurate flow control. The intelligent control valve actuator can provide the accuracy necessary for critical low-emission applications and can lower operating costs by reducing fuel waste. The direct-coupled actuator assembly provides precise control in increments of 0.1. The compact design allows mounting in any direction or orientation, saving pipe-train space.
Combustion Analyzers
Models EGA2 and EGA4 have complete sample-conditioning probe assemblies, built-in impact printers and rechargeable batteries. The combustion analyzers employ command-language text and keyboard; store up to 250 samples; and are supplied with a protective carrying case to store instrument, probe, charger and other accessories. Both units offer O2 and CO electromechanical sensor cells.
Boiler Feed-Pump Control Valve Multi-Z is designed to handle high-pressure drop applications where entrained solids are a problem and is suited for system startup and boiler-feed water recirculation. The control valve has a multi-stage trim design that eliminates cavitation and provides extended trim life. The addition of a venturi outlet nozzle provides further trim and seat protection from high velocity, cavitation and flashing. Its linear multi-stage plug design provides high rangeability and throttling resolution. Available in sizes from 1 to 4" and in pressure classes from ANSI 300 to 2500, the valve accommodates diaphragm or piston actuators.
Stainless Steel Strainers Thompson strainers remove particles from process water, cooling water and other streams. Available in Type 304 and Type 316 stainless steel, the strainers have a large conical screen element that provides more screen surface area. The strainers are available with several screen mesh options ranging from large perforated hole-openings down to those approximately 50 µm. Optional instrumentation packages include an automatic timer flush package, which is programmed to automatically open the strainer’s flush port on a periodic basis.
Silicon Carbide Materials HALSIC for high-temperature environments provides dimensional stability and thermal shock resistance despite being subjected to extreme mechanical strain in high-temperature applications. Typical thermal-management applications include tubes and rollers used in roller kilns, as well as rectangular batts, setting rings and plate setters for porcelain production.
Butterfly Valves Heavy-duty butterfly valves help avoid corrosion problems in demanding conditions. With a one-piece body made of glass-filled polypropylene, they offer high-impact resistance and light weight, as well as mechanical and environmental strength. Due to a disc design, they minimize pressure loss and turbulence in the line. The disc is offered in PVC, Corzan, CPVC, PPL, PVDF or ABS. The shaft is made of stainless steel, and the gasket can be supplied in food-grade EPDM or Viton.
