System Helps Keep Oil, Gas Control Systems Safe A project created to help secure U.S. oil and gas control systems, and help minimize the chance that a cyber attack could severely cripple America’s oil and gas infrastructure, has proven successful during early testing.
For the past 12 months, Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, N.M., has served as the lead national laboratory in Project LOGIIC (Linking the Oil and Gas Industry to Improve Cyber Security)
. The project was undertaken because cyber attacks — such as by viruses, worms or other forms of cyber-terrorism — on process control networks and related systems could destabilize energy industry supply capabilities and negatively impact the national economy.
Funded by the Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate, LOGIIC brought together 14 public and private organizations, including suppliers of industrial process control systems, to identify ways to reduce cyber vulnerabilities in process control and SCADA systems. The goal of the project was to identify new types of security sensors for process control networks.
Sandia worked with project partners to create a simulation test bed and apply this environment to counter potential threats to the oil and gas industry using hypothetical attack scenarios. Sandia researchers created two real-time models of control systems used for refinery and pipeline operations.
To test the system’s monitoring capabilities, Sandia researchers developed five vulnerability scenarios based on cyber compromises commonly used in the hacker community. Two scenarios were extensively tested to illustrate the effectiveness of the monitoring solution. Ray Parks, who led the development of the scenarios, used his background as a member of Sandia’s cyber red team, which has performed numerous vulnerability assessments of oil and gas and other critical infrastructure facilities.

Gasmac’s main product offerings included infrared process heaters, custom-designed batch and continuous ovens and heat-treating furnaces, and aluminum stack melters and holders. Can-Eng will continue to operate from its Niagara Falls, Ontario, facility.

Condenser Coils Condenser coil takes the superheated vapor from the compressor and cools that vapor down to saturation. It then completely condenses all of the vapor into liquid, and continues to subcool the resulting liquid to a desired temperature below saturation. Construction features of the condenser coils include 0.375 or 0.5" OD tubes in copper or 0.625" OD tubes in copper, stainless steel or carbon steel. Circuiting is one section in standard units but multiple sections are available. The fin surface can be sine wave (corrugated); ripple (peak and valley); or flat. Casing materials of construction are galvanized steel, stainless steel, carbon steel, copper or aluminum.
Plug Fans The compact “cartridge” design of plug fans makes them suitable for applications where the system plenum acts as the fan housing such as those in ovens, dryers and other high-capacity systems. Specifications include capacities to 74,000 cfm; pressures to
20" wg; and temperatures to 1,300°F (704°C). Offered in 12 sizes ranging from 12 to 49", the fans can be specified with a choice of two backwardly inclined wheels: AcoustaFoil (with airfoil blades) or PLR (with flat, single-thickness blades).Wheels are dynamically balanced, and all fans are checked at specified operating speed.
Corrosion in boilers and deaerators occurs most often during periods when the equipment is idle or offline. Boiler Lizard, an all-organic boiler system seasonal lay-up treatment, is used to protect pipes, heat exchangers and boiler equipment from off season corrosion. As a vapor corrosion inhibitor (VCI), it works to provide system protection and helps maintains the equipment’s longevity.
Digital Infrared Thermometer MI Series is a two-piece infrared temperature measurement system with a miniature sensing head and separate electronics, covering a temperature range from -40 to 1,112°F (-40 to 600°C). The sensor has increased optical resolution, optimizing its performance in demanding process control environments and allowing direct replacement of contact probes. The small (14 mm dia., 28 mm length) sensor size allows it to be installed in tight places. It is housed in a stainless steel enclosure with IP65 ratings. Signal-processing features include emissivity, sample and hold, peak hold, valley hold, and averaging function.
Ultramax units can operate at pressures to 500 psig (35 barg) and at low and high temperatures in the range of -320 to 300°F (-195 to 150°C). Capable of handling liquids, gases and mixtures of the two, the all-welded heat exchanger can be used with aggressive media when special alloy construction is specified. Up to 400 gal/min capacity is possible due to 4" connections. High flow rates can be attained through connections up to 12".
