An infrared thermometer from Fluke Corp., Everett, Wash., has received Factory Mutual (FM) approval as an intrinsically safe device.

Intrinsic safety is a protection standard employed in potentially explosive atmospheres. Devices that are certified as “intrinsically safe” are designed to be unable to release sufficient energy, by either thermal or electrical means, to cause ignition of flammable material such as gases, dust and particulates.

As an intrinsically safe device, Fluke 68IS provides added user safety when measuring surface temperature in potentially explosive or flammable environments. It has a temperature range of -25 to 1,400oF (-32 to 760oC) and can support spot measurement, temperature differential and scanning techniques to monitor surface temperature, and help locate potential blockages or malfunctioning systems.
