Plateflow is designed to yield higher heat transfer coefficients than other types of exchangers. With true countercurrent flow, the plate-and-frame heat exchangers require one-third to one-fifth the surface area of shell-and-tube exchangers. Heat exchanger designs include free-flow models for clog-resistant performance as well as double-wall and semi-welded plate designs for contamination protection and aggressive fluids.
