Metso's service center in Columbus, Miss., was the recipient of the first ever Green Bay Packaging “Outstanding Supplier” award. The award was created and distributed to recognize the benefits the mill has realized since entering into a roll service agreement with Metso.
In recent years, the mill has undertaken a substantial improvement campaign, initiated by Mill Manager Matt Szymanski, in an effort to revitalize the Number 1 linerboard machine as well as the overall mill environment. Szymanski worked with a team of mill personnel to oversee and optimize the continuous improvement program.
After achieving significant improvements in machine efficiency, cleanliness and productivity and in a number of work areas within the mill, the Green Bay Packaging team turned its attention to cutting costs, according to company officials. The first target was to find savings in their roll program: repair, maintenance and covers. The mill selected Metso because the Metso program offered a continuous improvement agreement.
Green Bay Packaging recently completed a year-long cycle under the program with good results. In fact, so pleased was the mill, that at one of the regularly scheduled team meetings, the mill team surprised Metso by presenting the company with the newly created award. According to Szymanski, the mill actually developed the award because of the cooperative success between Metso and Green Bay Packaging.
Szymanski told the assembled group, "This agreement with Metso will be the benchmark by which all other agreements this mill enters into will be judged."
