Focus on Energy, Wisconsin’s statewide resource for energy efficiency and renewable energy, awarded coated-paper manufacturer NewPage Corp., and its Biron, Wis., mill, $83,536 for successful completion of three projects in the mill’s boiler house.
The projects, completed in the last half of 2009, involved turbine No. 3 and
boilers No. 4 and No. 5. Together, the improvements made it possible to capture
and reclaim heat from the steam process, and generate additional output from
the steam, which reduced the quantity of purchased fossil fuel. The additional
electricity generated in-house through these efficiency improvements now powers
the mill’s general operations.
Sean Wallace, Biron’s mill manager, Dave Nalbach, mill power and energy
manager, and Mike Schreier, controller for Consolidated Water Power Co., in
Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., accepted the award.
Focus on Energy’s support “made it possible for us to pursue these costly
endeavors and realize true benefit almost immediately,” Wallace says. Focus on
Energy works with eligible Wisconsin businesses on cost-effective energy
efficiency and renewable energy projects.
Projected annual savings from the boiler room improvements equates to the energy
consumed by nearly 200 average households. Additionally, greenhouse gas
emissions will be reduced by approximately 1,820 tons (1,650 metric tons),
similar to removing 330 cars from the road each year.
NewPage, headquartered in Miamisburg, Ohio, produces coated freesheet, coated
groundwood, newsprint and specialty papers.
