The Northeast is about to get a whole lot hotter as competitors fire up their soldering irons at the first Northeast soldering skills competition. Planned for September 18 in Boxborough, Mass., the regional competition will pit expert technicians against each other to build a functional electronics assembly within a 30-min time limit. Judges will evaluate soldering assemblies in accordance with IPC-A-610E Class 3 criteria, cleanliness and technique.

According to IPC-Association Connecting Electronics Industry, cash prizes of $500, $250 and $100 will be awarded to the top three. In addition, the first place winner will earn complimentary airfare, hotel stay and entrance into the international grand championship to be held at IPC Apex Expo on February 21, 2013, in San Diego.

“If you make your living with a soldering iron, then this competition is for you,” says Kris Roberson, manager of assembly technology for the Bannockburn, Ill.-based electronics association.

Held in conjunction with a REStronics company seminar event, the competition is open to only 24 competitors. Individuals interested in participating should contact Marie Corrigan, REStronics’ inside sales representative, at (732) 617-6990 or mcorrigan@restronics.com.
