Organic rankine cycle (ORC) technology was applied to generate power from low-temperature heat ranging from 170 to 252°F (77 to 122°C) at a well site in McKenzie County, N.D.
Natural gas that would otherwise be flared is used to fuel an industrial boiler, which heats water to run a generator and produces clean energy that is used for on-site processes. This offsets the cost of electricity from the grid or diesel generators.
