An oven fire caused flames to shoot out of Peerless Coatings’ facility in Hawthorne, N.J. The company bakes coatings onto metal with high heat in ovens.

Although sprinklers were able to contain the two-alarm fire horizontally, it spread vertically through the roof and to the back of the building. About 50 firefighters responded to the blaze, which was under control after one hour. The company’s employees evacuated safely, but one firefighter suffered second-degree burns on his arm. The borough fire marshal will review the building’s damage before anyone is allowed back into the facility.
