“Steam Traps: Critical Engineered Devices for Optimal Performance of Steam Systems,” an updated technical sheet from Fluid Controls Institute (FCI), is available as a free download from the institute’s website.

Improper selection of steam traps can lead to inefficient steam system performance, including poor heat transfer and possible water hammer, FCI notes. The technical sheet discusses the importance of steam trap function and selection for the effective removal of condensate and air from steam systems. Simple selection guidelines are provided for applications such as removing condensate from steam distribution piping (drip) and after heat exchangers (process).

Tech Sheet ST-105 also is intended to help ensure that the smallest components of a steam system are given proper attention in order to provide extended and efficient system operation. FCI is a non-profit trade association with a membership comprising the leading manufacturers of fluid control and conditioning equipment.
