A railcar manufacturer based in Southwest installed a regenerative thermal oxidizer (RTO) for the abatement of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from its paint systems.

The 55,000 scfm RTO from Catalytic Products International, Lake Zurich, Ill., was installed in place of a 40,000 scfm concentrator and RTO system. The larger RTO will control VOC emissions from one paint booth for exterior spraying along with VOC emissions from two interior spray lines. It also will be used to control the exhaust streams containing hydrocarbon solvents such as toluene, methyl ethyl ketone and xylenes. The oxidizer was designed to provide 98.5 percent destruction rate efficiency (DRE) and 95 percent thermal efficiency.

To minimize downtime, the RTO and ductwork were fully installed and commissioned while the paint booth for exterior spraying remained in operation and controlled by the existing RTO. The installation of the RTO and related equipment included a revised concrete pad design, new and modified ductwork, booster fan, exhaust stack and control house.
