French insect producer Agronutris selected Bühler Group as the process solution provider for its first commercial-scale black soldier fly plant in Rethel, France. The plant is scheduled to go into operation in 2023.

The approximately 172,000 ft² (16,000 m²) insect plant, when operating at full capacity, will process up to 70,000 tons of organic residues and produce protein for the aquaculture and pet-food markets. Bühler will provide feedstock preparation to supply feed to the larvae; an automated larvae growth system with climate control; and a frass-handling system. Bühler also will deliver a processing line to convert the grown larvae into protein meal and lipids.

In addition, Bühler will be responsible for project execution, which encompasses engineering, procurement, manufacturing, supply, installation and commissioning.
