The 2023 Process Heating & Cooling Show is a place for anyone involved with industrial heating and cooling processes. The effective application of heat, or the removal of it via cooling, is involved in critical, transformative steps during the manufacturing processes of many products. Attendees can meet with industrial cooling and heating equipment makers on our show floor and attend our technical program.

The educational program kicks off Wednesday, May 24, at 9 a.m., with our keynote presentation, “Decarbonization of Industrial Sector – Pathways, Challenges and Opportunities,” Sandeep Alavandi of GTI Energy will explore how decarbonization of the industrial sector will lead to reduced greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs), reduced environmental impact and increased jobs.

The industrial sector is a key contributor to the U.S. economy, and it is critical to the functioning of the different segments in the value chain. In addition, the sector is a significant energy user and emits one-third of the emissions among all the sectors in the United States.

The industrial sector is considered hard to decarbonize due to its unique operations and processes. The presentation will discuss the challenges of the industry and solutions that are currently available for decarbonization, including the initiatives from the industry and the government to support and expedite the transformation.

Also on Wednesday, the Ammonia Safety & Training Institute (ASTI) will present an eight-hour ammonia safety day. Presented in partnership with the Global Cold Chain Association, the International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration, and the Refrigerating Engineers and Technicians Association, the safety day curriculum will address how to put more action in your emergency action plan to prevent, mitigate, and prepare to stop emergency events when they are small. Topics include:

  • The physiological effects of ammonia on the body.
  • The chemical and physical properties of ammonia.
  • The future of green and blue ammonia.
  • Integrating industrial response with public safety command.
  • The value of prevention, protection and preparedness.
  • Understanding hazards, mitigating risks and preparing for threats.
  • Evacuation, decontamination and medical care.
  • Lessons learned from accidents and emergency events.
  • The value and use of chemical protective clothing and equipment.

It is intended for all those who respond to, regulate or work with ammonia, including all emergency managers. Fees include classroom instruction, materials and handouts; continental breakfast, networking breaks and lunch; a full conference registration to the Process Heating & Cooling Show; and a certificate of completion.

On Wednesday and Thursday, a program of continuing education sessions provides opportunities to earn credits and expand your knowledge. Courses in the paid education program include:

  • 5 Best Practices for Energy Baselining
  • Decarbonization Process: Heat Pumps Utilizing Hydrocarbons and CO2
  • CO2 Chillers for Process Cooling Applications: Performance Comparison with HFC/Os, Other Natural Refrigerants and Relevant Field Experience
  • Beyond Freon: A Closer Look at the Next Generation Refrigerants
  • Enforcement Awareness: General Duty Clause Requirements for Ammonia Refrigeration
  • Approaching Zero: Managing Cooling Water Discharge

On Thursday, May 25, the Air Movement and Control Association (AMCA), will present three courses in our free conference theater. Mike Humann of the New York Blower Co. will kick off Thursday’s conference lineup with “Minimizing & Troubleshooting Fan System Effect.” His session explores how system effect — the result of less-than-ideal conditions at the inlet or outlet of a fan — adversely affects fan performance. Following his presentation, head to the show floor to see a live demonstration of the concepts he discusses.

AMCA also will present “Specifying High-Temperature Industrial Fans” by Aaron Saldanha, Howden, a Chart Industries Company. The focus of this presentation will be on how to specify fans for high temperature applications and the impact of these specifications on the fan design. The third presentation in AMCA’s lineup is “Specifying Fans for Variable-Speed Operation in Industrial Environments” by Marcel Kamutzki, Daltec Process Fans. Marcel will examine the opportunities for variable-speed fans, highlight potential pitfalls, and present strategies to mitigate risks and improve operational efficiency and reliability.

In addition, in advance of the exhibition, the Industrial Heating Equipment Association will present a one-day safety standards and codes seminar, focused on combustion safety. The seminar on Tuesday, May 23, covers critical safety information for those involved with a wide range of industrial thermal process applications. The full-day course will focus on recent updates in the newly released NFPA 86 Standards for Ovens & Furnaces, 2023 Edition. Attendees will also learn about principles and concepts for several critical safety topics.

In addition to learning about new technologies in the educational theaters, those attending the Process Heating & Cooling Show will find it is also a great way to connect with other professionals. This event provides a unique opportunity to meet and network with other individuals who share a passion for process heating and cooling. This can lead to new business opportunities, collaborations and valuable industry connections.
