Despatch Industries, Minneapolis, has increased drawing productivity by 30 percent and made substantial quality improvements by implementing an integrated collection of automated routines that are written in the ObjectARX format from Avatech Solutions, Owings Mills, Md. Application engineers from Avatech's Des Moines, Iowa, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, offices updated Despatch's CAD routines.
The original routines addressed two basic areas - file management and automating certain repetitive drawing operations. Despatch management began looking for an experienced integrator capable of updating the routines. Avatech rewrote most of Despatch's existing routines in ObjectARX. Avatech substantially redesigned the file management system, developing an integrated environment.
Avatech currently is creating a major new set of routines that will provide another productivity gain. These routines will integrate the file management system with Despatch's Mapics material resources planning (MRP) system running on an IBM AS/400 platform. Until now, designers had to create a form each time a new drawing was created or a drawing was revised to indicate bill of materials changes. The form then had to be manually input into the MRP system. The new routine will check every night for new and changed drawings.
According to Despatch, the streamlined user interface, increased execution speed and enhanced functionality of the new routines have provided substantial productivity gains. In addition, the standardization approach and increased checking capabilities of the new routines have improved consistency and quality. In addition to creating these routines, Avatech prepared complete documentation and trained Despatch designers. The result has been a significant improvement to the design process.
