Metso Power will supply Kuopion Energia Oy with a multi-fuel fired power boiler to its new combined heat and power (CHP) plant located in Haapaniemi, in the town of Kuopio, Finland. Boiler startup is scheduled for late 2011. The total value of Kuopion Energia's investment is approximately $ 170 million (Euro135 million), of which Metso's equipment and installation delivery is about half.

The 149 MWth power boiler will utilize circulating fluidized-bed technology to burn peat and forest residues to produce district heat for the city of Kuopio and electricity to the national grid. The CFB combustion technology means Kuopion Energia will be able to increase power plant capacity and biofuel use as well as reduce oil consumption.

The new boiler will replace the first pulverized peat-fired boiler built at Haapaniemi power plant in 1972 by Metso. At that time the plant was the first municipal power plant using milled peat as its main fuel.

Metso Power is headquartered in Tempere, Finland.
