The 149 MWth power boiler will utilize circulating fluidized-bed technology to burn peat and forest residues to produce district heat for the city of Kuopio and electricity to the national grid. The CFB combustion technology means Kuopion Energia will be able to increase power plant capacity and biofuel use as well as reduce oil consumption.
The new boiler will replace the first pulverized peat-fired boiler built at Haapaniemi power plant in 1972 by Metso. At that time the plant was the first municipal power plant using milled peat as its main fuel.
Metso Power is headquartered in Tempere, Finland.
