After more than a decade of research, a maker of physical vapor deposition thin-film coating systems for industrial and consumer product applications has developed what it says is the first true-black advanced low temperature arc vapor-deposition coating.

Vapor Technologies Inc., Longmont, Colo., has integrated a proprietary optical absorption process into its line of thin-film deposition systems to deliver the darkest, pure-black cosmetic finish to its color palette, says David Humenik, president.

It has been difficult for any company to produce a true, neutral black using PVD techniques, according to Vapor Tech. The company says its process results in stable, repeatable coatings that can be customized. The low temperature process allows the new black to adhere to many materials, including electroplated plastics, without damaging the part, the company says.
