The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is upgrading the Scattergood Generating Station with cleaner power generating technology from GE. LADWP plans to phase out Scattergood’s 460 MW Unit 3 conventional steam boiler, in operation since 1974, and replace it with cleaner technology.

For the repowering project, LADWP chose GE’s heavy-duty aero-derivative gas turbines integrated with a distributed control system. The system will pair one GE GT-7F.05 gas turbine in a rapid-response combined-cycle power island with two LMS100 gas turbines in a hybrid power plant. According to GE, the configuration allows for the capture of electricity produced by wind, which helps to achieve the balance required to maintain a steady flow of power.

Victor Abate, president and CEO of power generation products at GE Power & Water, says the approach should help LADWP balance the energy grid more cost-effectively.

Commercial operation is scheduled to begin by the end of 2015. GE’s equipment will be manufactured at its facilities in Greenville, S.C., Schenectady, N.Y., and Houston.
