Datalogging technology typically used to monitor industrial and commercial processes is helping to preserve history.

The Hobo MX1101 from Onset Computer Corp., Cape Cod, Mass., measures and transmits temperature and relative humidity data wirelessly to mobile devices via Bluetooth technology. The self-contained wireless datalogger, which works with the company’s app for logger setup and data management, enables staff to use a smart phone or tablet to access the environmental data at any time from a distance up to 100'.

This allows document preservists for the Magna Carta to monitor the document’s environment without opening its display case.

Originally issued by England’s King John in June 1215 to prevent civil war between the king and his barons, the Magna Carta serves as fundamental guarantee of rights and privileges. The best-surviving copy of the Magna Carta is currently on exhibition in Britain’s Salisbury Cathedral to commemorate the document’s 800-year anniversary.
