An ashing furnace provides model conditions for ashing petrochemicals, coal and other hydrocarbons, says its manufacturer. Thermcraft Inc., Winston-Salem, N.C., designed the Model XSB with a maximum operating temperature of 2012°F (1100°C) and a heated chamber volume of up to 1.4 ft3 (40 L).

The furnace has a low external temperature due to an air gap between the chamber exterior and actual furnace exterior. It also includes replaceable wound-wire heating elements. Safety features include a vertical lift door that ensures the hot insulation stays facing away from the operator and a protective switch that interrupts power to the elements when the door is opened.

The furnace is designed for complete combustion of test samples and conforms to multiple ASTM and ISO specifications.
