Oven to Process Aluminum for Satellites

Several tiny satellites are can be seen in this photograph taken by an Expedition 33 crew member on the International Space Station. The satellites were released outside the Kibo laboratory using a Small Satellite Orbital Deployer attached to the Japanese module’s robotic arm on October 4, 2012. An oven from JPW will play a critical part in prepping future satellites for orbit.

A walk-in oven manufactured by JPW Industrial Ovens will serve the unique purpose of aging aluminum for satellites. The aluminum will be part of a cooling system design that will help reduce heat in the satellites’ electronics.

Designed for a company in Pennsylvania, the oven is a 500°F (260°C) electric unit with horizontal airflow that keeps the temperature uniform throughout the chamber. An aluminized steel chamber boasts 288 ft³ of space.
