Enerkem Inc.’s first full-scale commercial biofuel facility in Edmonton, Alberta, is producing methanol from household waste.

In less than five minutes, Enerkem's technology turns household waste into methanol that can be used as a transport fuel (biofuel) or as a chemical intermediate. The thermochemical process does not generate waste and prevents methane emissions associated with landfills. The four-step method includes feedstock preparation, gasification, cleaning and conditioning of syngas, and catalytic synthesis.

Since the start of production, the Alberta Biofuels facility has met the quality standards set by the International Methanol Producers and Consumers Association (IMPCA) for the production and sale of methanol.
