A Midwest fiberglass bathroom fixture manufacturer installed a 35,000 scfm regenerative thermal oxidizer (RTO) for the abatement of volatile organic compounds primarily consisting of styrene.

The oxidizer, which was supplied by Catalytic Products International (CPI), Lake Zurich, Ill., controls the emissions from two fiberglass resin coating booths. The emissions control device has more than 98.5 percent destruction rate efficiency (DRE) and a thermal efficiency of over 95 percent, allowing for minimal gas consumption and operating costs. The system replaced an existing fluidized bed concentrator and thermal oxidizer system that were unable to achieve the required VOC removal efficiencies.

CPI provided turnkey installation, including equipment engineering, design and supply of the oxidizer, process exhaust ductwork, manual-balancing and bypass T-dampers, and the exhaust stack. A two-stage prefilter added to the inlet of the RTO prevents particulate matter from entering the oxidizer and reduces maintenance frequency.
