Positive displacement type compressors such as reciprocating, scroll or screw, are commonly used for process heating and cooling applications. These compressors have a wide operating map that supports a wide range of temperatures. However, these compressors require an oil management system to lubricate bearings and provide a seal for compression. This introduces significant system complexity and maintenance requirements. In addition, oil coating the heat exchanger surfaces can adversely impact operation and reduce system efficiency. Recent technological advances have expanded the capabilities of oil free, magnetic bearing centrifugal compressors to support process applications with a wider operating map while also providing additional benefits through sustainable lifetime performance and minimal impact to the environment.
